Time is up for the tinker man

After a disastrous month for Claudio Ranieri's Roma, the Giallorossi board of directors wanted to discuss the Italians future at the club. 'The tinkerman' resigned before these discussions could take place.

Results have not gone Roma's way in February, 1 draw and 4 consecutive defeats in all competitions have left the club 8th in Serie A and facing elimination from the Champions League. They last picked up any points in the League on 02/02 when Roma drew 1-1 with Brescia, who currently sit in the relegation zone.

Defeats followed. a 5-3 loss to a rejuvenated Inter Millan, followed by a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to 3rd place Napoli, In the Champions League, 3 away goals in 12 minutes all but sealed Shakhtar Donetsk's progression to the quarter-final stage. But it was today's defeat away at Bologna which was the tipping point.

Shakhtar celebrate in the Stadio Olympico

The Giallorossi were the visitors at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris to face Genoa. A Francesco Totti inspired Roma were 2-0 within 16 minutes. Totti providing the assists for Philippe Mexes and Nicolas Burdisso. Totti himself got himself on the scoresheet and Roma were cruising at 3-0 up on 51 minutes. Cue the collapse. Rodrigo Palacio made it 3-1 within a minute. 34 minutes later another Palacio goal and 2 from Alberto Paloschi won the game for Genoa, and Ranieri's time was over.

Ranieri, a life long Roma fan released a statement.

“I always thought of what was best for Roma,

“After a game like today’s, I think it is right to send a signal. So at the final whistle I went to the locker room to thank the team and decided to resign. Today we went on to the field with the desire to fight and win, for all those who love this club and the city.

“Every minute of my day is Roma, I have always said that losing here shakes me to the core and hurts far more than at any other club. Seeing my lads fight to the bitter end and lose, that is very painful for me.

“I thank the fans and President Sensi. Despite all the difficulties, we did a great job last season and this year"

Sources coming out of Italy are reporting that youth team coach Vincenzo Montella will take over.
